Ram Nath Kovind is also a former lawyer who is sworn in as the 14th President of India. He is the second Indian Dalit Indian leader to become President after the first Dalit President ‘Kocheril Raman Narayanan’. Prior to his presidency, Kovind served as the Governor of the state of Bihar from the year 2015 to the year 2017. Ram Nath Kovind was born on 1 October 1945 in Parukh, Kanpur Dehat district, Uttar Pradesh, India to Maikulal Kori and Kalavati. He received a bachelor’s degree in commerce and an LLB degree from Kanpur University. After completing his legal studies, Kovind moved to Delhi and started preparing for the Civil Services Examination. He passed the Civil Services Examination in his third attempt but refused to join the services, as he was selected for allied service and not for the IAS. He then enrolled himself as a lawyer in the Bar Council of Delhi and started practicing. As a lawyer, Kovind provided free legal aid to the weaker sections of the society, women, and poor people of Delhi. Later he was appointed as the Central Government Permanent Council of the Supreme Court of India and practiced as a lawyer till the year 1993. In 1991, when he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Kovind joined politics.
Ram Nath Kovind was born in the Scheduled Castes (Koli community). His father Maikulal Kori was a local physician and ran a grocery store. His mother was Kalavati, who died shortly before Kovind’s birth. Ram Nath has four brothers and 3 sisters and is the youngest of 5 brothers.
Ram Nath Kovind married Savita Kovind (a retired government employee) on 30 May 1974. So he has a son Prashant Kumar, who is an employee in private airlines, a daughter Swati Kovind, who works in the Integration Department of Air India.
After completing his law studies, he practiced as a lawyer for nearly 16 years, in which he provided free legal services to the poor and needy people of Delhi. He worked as a personal assistant to Prime Minister Morarji Desai during the years 1977 and 1978.
In the year 1991, Kovind joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and served as the national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He then contested the Lok Sabha elections from Ghatampur and Bhogipur constituencies in Kanpur Nagar but lost both places. Later, in the year 1994, he was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) of Rajya Sabha. Being a member of the BJP, he served as President. Between 1998 and 2002, he was president of BJP’s Scheduled Caste Dalit Morcha and All India Koli Samaj. He was sworn in as the Governor of Bihar on 8 August 2015 by the then President of India, Pranab Mukherjee. He was nominated for the presidency in June 2017 for the President of the ruling NDA government of India, while he was sworn in as the 14th President of India in July 2017, defeating UPA candidate Meera Kuma by 66% of the votes.
