Nirmala Sitharaman is a politician of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is currently serving as India’s Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister. Sitharaman has been a member of the Rajya Sabha of Karnataka since 2014.

Nirmala Sitharaman was born on 18 August 1959 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. His zodiac sign is Leo. He spent his childhood in various parts of Tamil Nadu, as his father worked in the Indian Railways and due to which his father kept changing. He did his schooling from Madras and Tiruchirappalli. Nirmala Sitharaman received her bachelor’s degree in Economics from Sitalakshmi Ramaswamy College and a Masters degree in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
She then enrolled in JNU where she became aware of politics. While studying at JNU, Nirmala promoted Nalini Ranjan Mohanty, a student of Godavari hostel, who was the presidential candidate in the college. At the same time, Sitharaman enrolled for a PhD in Indo-European textile trades, but could not complete it, as her husband received a scholarship to the London School of Economics and moved to London. Nirmala served as a salesgirl at the home decor shop “Habitat” in Regent Street, London.
Nirmala Sitharaman belongs to a Tamil Iyengar Brahmin family. His father, Narayanan Sitharaman, was an employee in the Indian Railways and his mother, K.K. Savitri is a housewife. He has a sister.
Nirmala met political commentator and communications consultant Prakla Prabhakar while she was studying at Jawaharlal Nehru University. The two got married in the year 1986. With whom they have a daughter, named Wangmayi.
Nirmala decided to pursue a career as an assistant to an economist at the Association of Agricultural Engineers in London. Subsequently, he worked as a senior manager in the research department at PricewaterhouseCoopers, London. Then, Nirmala Sitharaman briefly worked in the BBC World Service. Sitharaman returned to India in the year 1991. Whereas, he served as the director of the Center for Public Policy Studies, Hyderabad. During the NDA regime (1998–2004), Nirmala was nominated to the National Commission for Women (NCW), but her term ended immediately when the UPA came to the center in 2004. When she joined NCW, Nirmala came in contact with Sushma Swaraj. In 2008, Sitharaman joined the BJP and in 2010 served as the party’s spokesperson.
She then moved from Hyderabad to Delhi. In 2014, Sitharaman became Commerce Minister with independent charge in the Narendra Modi cabinet. After a cabinet reshuffle, he was promoted and given the Ministry of Finance and Corporate Affairs. On 3 September 2017, Nirmala became India’s first full-time woman defense minister.
She became the second woman in the country to hold the post after Indira Gandhi, who once held the charge for 20 days. On 30 May 2019, Nirmala became the first full-time woman finance minister of India.
His total assets are 2.63 crore rupees (in 2019), plus more than 1 lakh rupees as Member of Parliament carries some other allowances.
